WHY PRESERVE YOUR LIFE STORY?

everyone has a story
We agree with Mark Twain when he said, "There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility. Inside of the dullest exterior, there is a drama, a comedy, and a tragedy." Believe us, you're more interesting than you think you are, and your family wants to know your story!
no one can tell your story like you
Only you have all the pieces to your puzzle and know where they all fit. Nobody else in the world has your personality, feelings, experiences, or wisdom. If someone else is left with your puzzle and not all the pieces, there will be too many gaps to get the complete picture of you.
stay connected to your posterity
You might be a parent or a grandparent, but at your core, you're you. Does your family know who you are and how you came to be that way? What about your family members in 50 years? Undoubtedly, you've had struggles and triumphs that your family will be able to relate to and draw comfort from for generations from now. When your story is preserved, you won't be just a name on a pedigree chart. You'll still be you.
it will give you peace of mind
Knowing that your life story is recorded and preserved brings a sense of well-being. It's your chance to share thoughts and feelings that are sometimes hard to do in person. Your family will be grateful you did. When you leave behind your story, you leave behind a legacy.

Jenn Morrill

Jenn Morrill

Owner/Managing Editor

Jenn is passionate about preserving life histories in a way that even teenagers will be interested in reading. Her passion for personal histories comes from her belief that everyone is fascinating and has a story to tell that can inspire and uplift their family. Completing a personal history project is no small feat, and it can be disappointing to see it gather dust on a bookshelf, but if histories are polished and presented in a fun, appealing way then their impact on future generations will be far greater (because they will actually be read!).

Jenn has a BA in English and editing from Brigham Young University. She studied oral history editing where she learned the art of transforming the spoken word into a fun and easy-to-read narrative that still retains the person’s voice so that it feels like you are having a conversation with the person as you read their story. Jenn believes everyone’s story can (and should) be told in an interesting and engaging way.

Even with all the new digital tips, tricks, and software for writing a life story, people still struggle to complete it. Wherever you are at in the process, Jenn will get it done for you, and you will have a beautiful book to share with your family.

Jenn currently lives in Spanish Fork, Utah with her husband and four children. She gives presentations on writing life stories to local Relief Societies and is available upon request.

Services

We are your one-stop shop to get your life story (or the story of a loved one) published. Use one or all of our services—we do it all. We offer à la carte ($35/hr) or package pricing depending on what you need. Bottom line: we’ll get your history done, no matter what stage your project is at.

Interviewing

Interviewing

The time we spend during our one-on-one interviews is relaxed and enjoyable, focused on getting to the heart of who you are through reflective questions. We prefer to visit your home for the interviews, but we are also available on Skype or Google Hangouts if you’re out of state or if it’s easier for you.

Transcribing

Transcribing

As soon as the interviews are complete, the transcribing begins. We use the hours we spend typing up interviews as an opportunity to become very familiar with your voice and stories, which is critical for us as we move to the next stage.

Organizing

Organizing

Once the interviews have all been transcribed, we immediately begin sorting the material into chronological sections. Answers to interview questions can sometimes jump around in history; careful attention is spent getting things back in order. From there, the form of your story begins to take shape as your tales are divided into chapters.

Storytelling

Storytelling

What’s the fun in writing a history if it reads like a history? We know your life wasn’t boring as you lived it, so we’ll be sure to keep people turning pages as they read about it. As we carefully piece together your story, we’ll use our storytelling skills (and your words!) to keep the narrative flowing. Don’t be startled when your story doesn’t begin with, “I was born…” (Spoiler alert: it will be more interesting than that!)

Scanning

Scanning

No history would be complete without your best photographs. We will scan them, clean them up, and make them look as good as they can, preserving them for all time in the archival pages of your heirloom book.

Editing

Editing

We do all the things you’d expect from an editor like fixing grammar, syntax, and spelling errors. We go beyond proofreading, though; we have special training in oral history editing. It takes extra care to retain your “voice.” Our goal is for readers who are familiar with you to say, “This sounds just like you!”

Designing

Designing

An appealing book cover and interior page design can mean the difference in a history being read or not. We use the best book layout software available (Adobe InDesign) to create a unique look for your book. We put a lot of thought into developing a style that matches your life and personality and that will reach out to even the most reluctant of family members.

Managing the Print Process

Managing the Print Process

Once you have approved the content and design of the book, we then begin working with a local book printer. We deal with figuring out spine width measurements and exporting files so you don’t have to. When all of the designed pages are printed, we double and triple check to make sure everything is just right before having it bound.

What Clients Say

Lauri Cunningham

Omaha, NE
My favorite part of my parents’ book, A Matter of Facts, was how it was put together so it read like a biographical novel. It was easy to read with lots of life stories. I felt even more connected to my parents. I laughed, cried, and found out information I never even knew about. The final product was worth every penny! It seemed like a lot when starting out, but my dad has since passed away, and this book has become priceless to me. I knew it was important to my parents to have their life written in book form, and that is initially why I wanted it as their 50th wedding anniversary gift. Now, it is a precious gift to all family who has the book on their shelf. If Jenn and her talented team hadn’t developed and made this book, the stories, names, dates, and memories would all be lost. My dad is gone, and my mom has Alzheimer’s. We are blessed they are now saved forever in written form.

Clark Moulton

Provo, UT
Our daughter sure knew who to hire. We are very pleased. This has saved us years of work!

Marge Ericksen

Springville, UT
The finished book has given me a sense of well-being that I’m not sure I fully understand. Jenn has captured the essence of who I am and what has shaped me, providing a precious connection to my posterity. I’m grateful for the experience of working with her on this project. It’s the perfect gift for grown children to give a parent!

Ferril Losee

Provo, UT
I wish to strongly recommend the work of Jenn Morrill. Her work was very professional, and the book which she prepared is fun to read. There is no way that I could have done as well by myself. It was surely the easy way to write a good life story.

Dean Ertel

Riverton, UT
It has been great working with Jenn. At first, my parents were hesitant to work with a stranger, but that concern quickly passed. Jenn did an excellent job interviewing my parents and writing the story of their lives in a way that may not have been possible any other way since they never fully talked about their history with family members. Although I’ve had the chance to learn parts of their history, it was never complete nor in a chronological order, which made it difficult to see the ‘big picture.’ This book helps to fill in many of the missing details and presents my parents’ life experiences in a way that will hopefully inspire others, including children, grandchildren, and onward, to understand the challenges they faced and how the Lord guided their lives to a new land. Our extended family got the book for Christmas, and all the grandchildren have been excited to learn about their grandparents. It has been a great, positive influence on our family. I am very thankful for the work that Jenn has done, and I highly recommend her services!
